A small group of students, professors and volunteers at the native plant sell at the University of Maryland's Arboretum on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011. The sell, sponsored by the non-profit organization Chesapeake Natives, includes only plants native to the Washington area, grown in the university's greenhouse. (Inside the Shell/Angela Harvey)

Sue Yarvan purchases plants from Chesapeake Natives volunteer Tracey Gelner. All of the plants are ecovars, meaning they have not been genetically modified, and contain subtle differences from other plants within the same species that allow them to survive in a particular region. The New England Aster is one of the two dozen varieties of plants at the sell. All of the plants have information cards describing the species and care instructions, to aid shoppers in choosing the correct type of plant for their home or garden. (Inside the Shell/Angela Harvey)
