Retired Olympian Inspires at Hoff Theater

Retired bronze medalist John Carlos speaks to University of Maryland students and faculty about his new book, The John Carlos Story, in the Hoff Theater on October 5. Even after more than 40 years since his courageous act of demonstration, the retired 6-foot-4 sprinter spoke with fire and vigor.

Carlos poses with Maryland junior, Aziz Sani, after signing a copy of The John Carlos Story, on October 5, 2011 in the Hoff Theater. Sani waited over 40 minutes to get a picture with the Olympian, but the determined environmental sciences major refused to leave without meeting the activist.

Copies of Carlos’ self-tilted autobiography, The John Carlos Story, were available for sale throughout the October 5 event in the lobby of Hoff Theatre. Later, students were even given the opportunity to get an autograph from the Olympic bronze medalist.
