Student group raises awareness for mental illness

Members of University of Maryland student group Active Minds explain their mission at their Stomp Out Stigma event on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 while sophomore Emily McNair participates by preparing a piece of butcher paper taped to the ground. The event took place on Hornbake Plaza from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and aimed to clear up misconceptions that students may have about mental illness. (Inside the Shell/Lizzy McLellan)

Students step across butcher paper laid down by members of Active Minds, as sophomores Anne Gladding and Taylor Harrison continue to write words and phrases such as "STIGMA" and "stomp on me." The paper was used to represent negative stereotypes often attached to mental illness, in order to capture students' attention. (Inside the Shell/Lizzy McLellan)

Buttons provided by Active Minds remind students that one in four adults are affected by mental illness in any given year. A member of the group, freshman psychology major Melanie Scarff, explained that "mental illness isn't just crazy people who are locked up. It's a part of life." (Inside the Shell/Lizzy McLellan)
