The Graveyard Shift

Symphonie Joly, 57, spends every night at McKeldin Library clearing trash, recycling, and scrubbing windows and desks. She is one of a small crew that cleans the library late at night, slipping out at dawn before many students begin to show up on Tuesday, Oct. 11. (Inside the Shell/Erin Durkin)
Joly immigrated with her family from Haiti around 11 years ago. She can barely speak English and is often heard quietly singing in the library in her first language, Creole. (Inside the Shell/Erin Durkin)
Joly has been working for the university for six years, but has only worked in the library for three years. Originally she worked in the dining services, but left because the job did not provide benefits. (Inside the Shell/Erin Durkin).
