My final project will be a profile on the Prince George’s County Youth Services program in the form of an audio slideshow. This program, which is a part of the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, seems on the surface to be just like any other recreational program. However, in this county, the department has a unique role. Prince George’s County is a large and diverse area, with a relatively large amount of resources when it comes to county-sponsored recreation. Likewise, the county has a greater necessity for this type of youth recreation and community involvement because many Prince George’s children and teens come from less fortunate backgrounds. My hook or angle will be a focus on the opportunities that Prince George’s County allows many teenagers to have. Working as a part-time writer for the department, I have seen some of these opportunities first-hand. These have included safe play sites and community centers which children and teens can attend for free at night as well as work programs for at-risk individuals to gain skills and knowledge and scholarship-funded camps at which teens can use art to cope with the challenges in their lives. I will include photos from these events and programs and from the offices and community centers that plan and implement them. I plan to interview professional staff, as well as younger, part-time staff and teen participants, in order to get some moving audio to accompany the pictures. My proposed headline is: “Breaking the Boundaries: Youth Program brings unexpected opportunities.”
